    Abstract. Photobiology deals with the interaction of light and living systems. However, we will talk about only one kind of photobiology: the interaction of light in the wavelength range – nm (ultraviolet light) and its interaction with biological systems, in specific, living cells (1). The objective of this book is to provide information and advice on protecting workers from ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure. The adverse health effects of both acute and chronic UVR exposures are reviewed, emphasizing solar UVR exposure of the outdoor worker.

    Photobiology is one of the few true interdisciplinary fields. It has an air of excitement about it. A glance at the table of contents indicates clearly that photobiology and its practitioners (individuals whose primary interests are in medicine, plant sci­ ences, animal sciences, molecular properties, and energy conversion) interact with the. Vitamin D3 is produced photochemically in the skin from 7-dehydrocholesterol. Terrestrial solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation (UVR) (∼ nm) comprises UVA ( nm) and UVB ( nm). 1 UVC ( nm) does not reach the Earth's surface because it is completely absorbed by stratospheric ozone. UVB accounts for no more than about 5% of terrestrial UVR, but its effects are typically much greater than those of UVA.
